Dear Kiwanians,
I am pleased to inform you that Foundation Scholarship Chair Tom Leahy has called a committee meeting to be held during the Circle K DCON on
Saturday, March 24 at 11:00 a.m. in the Philadelphia room of the LAX Marriott, which is located at 5855 W. Century Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90045. Please note the scholarship committee meeting will be held following
the McElwain judging, which is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. in the same room.
Be sure to check the hotel’s reader board upon arriving to confirm the meeting room has not changed as meeting rooms do sometimes change.
The purpose of our meeting is to discuss a policy recommendation made by the Scholarship Awards Committee. The Scholarship Awards Committee has recommended to the Scholarship Committee
the adoption of a policy to permit the use of a FASFA score as a tie breaker in determining awards. The Scholarship Awards Committee often finds they have to pass over Board members to meet the 1/3 rule and have no real basis for determining who should receive
a scholarship or not receive a scholarship. Their hope is that with FASFA scores available, they would be able to serve the students with the greatest need.
For your reference I have attached the current scholarship policy.
Because we will be meeting in a hotel, we will be unable to provide a teleconference option; however, we will be hosting a web based meeting using a service called Zoom for those
who are not already in attendance at the Circle K DCON and wish to participate in our meeting. If not attending in person, you may join the meeting from your personal computer or via your iPhone or Android by downloading the Zoom app for your phone:
https://zoom.us/j/813183892
If you’d like to test your pc or phone for use with Zoom, please send me an email and give me two or three times which you will be available during the next few days. I will set
up a Zoom meeting for you and me so we can test your settings in advance of the Scholarship Committee meeting.
If you are unable to join our meeting in person or via Zoom, please let me know.
Yours in Kiwanis Service,
Jennifer Chaves
